Corn plant arrangement and its effect on silage quality R. Bras. Zootec.
Skonieski,Fernando Reimann; Nörnberg,José Laerte; Kessler,Julcemar Dias; David,Diego Bitencourt de; Azevedo,Eduardo Bohrer de; Brüning,Gilmar; Pimentel,Concepta Margaret McManus.
This experiment was carried out to evaluate the effects of the row spacing between corn plants on silage quality. Different spacing between corn rows (40, 60, and 80 cm) was used, but the population of plants was maintained around 65,000/ha in all treatments. Analysis of variance was carried out and means were compared by Tukey's test at 5% of probability. A reduction in row spacing provided better spatial distribution of plants, but did not alter morphological composition or dry matter production. The corn with most equidistant spatial distribution (lowest row spacing) showed an increase in lignin concentration, neutral detergent fiber, and total carbohydrates, and showed a decrease in total digestible nutrients when compared with 80 cm row spacing....

Detection and evaluation of selection signatures in sheep PAB
Paim,Tiago do Prado; Ianella,Patrícia; Paiva,Samuel Rezende; Caetano,Alexandre Rodrigues; Pimentel,Concepta Margaret McManus.
Abstract: The recent development of genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) arrays made it possible to carry out several studies with different species. The selection process can increase or reduce allelic (or genic) frequencies at specific loci in the genome, besides dragging neighboring alleles in the chromosome. This way, genomic regions with increased frequencies of specific alleles are formed, caracterizing selection signatures or selective sweeps. The detection of these signatures is important to characterize genetic resources, as well as to identify genes or regions involved in the control and expression of important production and economic traits. Sheep are an important species for theses studies as they are dispersed worldwide and have...

Heritability estimates for body weight and height at withers in Brazilian army horses Ciência Rural
Tamioso,Priscilla Regina; Cosmo,Tiago Rafael; Pimentel,Concepta Margaret McManus; Dias,Laila Talarico; Teixeira,Rodrigo de Almeida.
The aim of this study was to estimate the heritability for weight and height at withers of 260-780 days of age No Defined Breed (NDB) horses, at intervals of 40 days, which belong to the Brazilian Army cavalry. Thus, the model considered the direct genetic effects as random ones, as fixed, the effects of sex and year of birth and the linear effects of height at withers and age, as covariates for the analysis of body weight, whereas for the analysis of height, the linear effect of weight was included as a covariate. For the complete data, the estimated heritability coefficients were 0.40±0.034 and 0.70±0.019 for weight and height at withers, respectively, indicating that individual selection for these traits may be effective. On the other hand, for the data...

Typology of beef production systems according to bioeconomic efficiency in the south of Brazil Ciência Rural
Canozzi,Maria Eugênia Andrighetto; Marques,Pedro Rocha; Teixeira,Odilene de Souza; Pimentel,Concepta Margaret McManus; Dill,Matheus Dhein; Barcellos,Júlio Otávio Jardim.
ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to evaluate the bioeconomic efficiency of beef cattle production systems in the south of Brazil. A survey was conducted with 33 beef cattle farmers operating with complete cycle production systems in areas larger or equal to 900 ha. Answers were classified in two drivers, technology (TEC) and management (MAN), which were separated into subfactors with their respective components. Multiple correspondence analysis, Tukey test, cluster analysis, and Pearson correlation were the statistics procedures. The TEC components were above normal for Brazilian farmers, but the gross margin is still lower than that needed to generate financial resources for a proper remuneration of cattle farmer. Farmers were classified into...
